  • HOMICIDE ON SADDLE RIDGE DRIVE IN SNELLVILLE

    Update:

    (Lawrenceville, Ga., Jan. 12, 2026) – Detectives have identified the victim as Abel Alejandro Unzicker Chavez (36, Snellville).  Derrick Devon Thomas (30, Snellville) has been charged with Felony Murder, Aggravated Assault, Possession of a Firearm during a Felony and Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon.  Detectives are still investigating what led up to the shooting.

    (Lawrenceville, Georgia, October 28, 2013)  Gwinnett County Animal Welfare & Enforcement Services is joining the Gwinnett CAN Challenge.  This event is a food drive initiated by The Holtkamp Family Foundation (www.holtkamphvac.com/canchallenge).  The purpose of the Gwinnett CAN Challenge is to increase donations to local food banks and raise awareness of this year round need.  The goal is to collect at least 10 tons of food.

    (Lawrenceville, Georgia) The Gwinnett County Police Department, in partnership with Gwinnett County Parks and Recreation, is proud to announce the implementation of a new program, Volunteer Citizens On Patrol (VCOP).  This is an excellent program that involves an extensive commitment on behalf of our Gwinnett County Police volunteers. This program will be the first of its kind for the Gwinnett County Police Department and it relies heavily on the participation of the volunteers from the Gwinnett County Police Department and their willingness to make our parks safer and a more enjoyable place to visit.

    UPDATE #1: Catherine “Celine” Peavy was located SAFE at the Sams Club in Athens.  She was recently reunited with her family.  (Grayson, Georgia) Gwinnett Police are searching for a missing elderly person with medical issues.  Officers responded to a missing person report shortly before 2:00pm.  The complainant reported that his wife, Catherine “Celine” Peavy (74), had been missing for about an hour.  He said that she has medical issues and is allowed to drive, but usually when someone is with her because she can get lost.

  • Citizens Police Academy

    The Gwinnett County Police Department is currently accepting applications for the upcoming Citizens Police Academy session.  The spring 2020 session will run from February 11, 2020 – April 02, 2020 and meet every Tuesday and Thursday from 6:30– 8:30 PM.  The CPA is open to all Gwinnett County residents 18 years of age or older who successfully pass the application process and a driver and criminal history check.  Attendees will participate in classroom lecture, police unit demonstrations, practical exercises, and will also meet a great group of fellow citizens.  The CPA is free of charge.  Applications must be submitted no later than February 03, 2020, and can be found on the volunteer opportunity page of the GCPD website.

    (Lawrenceville, Georgia) Gwinnett County Police Department is looking for a team of new police Chaplains to help comfort and counsel those in need during law enforcement related incidents. Police Chaplains play a very unique role in law enforcement by responding to the scene of traumatic events and helping those in need. Police Chaplains also serve those within the department who are dealing with personal stress, family crisis, or need help understanding employee assistance programs. We are looking for a team of highly motivated Chaplains from every religious denomination to help serve the diverse population of Gwinnett County. Anyone interested in the program will be required to complete a volunteer application. Additionally, candidates will be required to submit to a background check which may include a criminal history check, driving history check, references etc.

    (Lawrenceville, Georgia) Have you ever wondered how the police department is organized and operated?  Have you ever wanted to tour police headquarters?  Have you ever wondered what each unit in the police department actually does?  Well, you might be interested in joining the Gwinnett Police Citizens Police Academy.  We are currently accepting applications for our upcoming session.  The next academy will run from March 20th – May 10th.  The academy meets every Tuesday and Thursday from 6:30pm – 8:30pm.  The Citizens Police Academy is open to all Gwinnett County residents that are 18 years of age or older, who successfully pass the application process and a driver’s and criminal history check.  You will get classroom and practical applications, but also get to meet a great group of your fellow citizens.  Even better, it’s all FREE!  Applications will need to be submitted to Sgt.
