Gwinnett County Firefighters were called to the scene of a house fire incident at the above address. The caller to the 911 dispatch center stated that a neighbor’s house was on fire. Prior to firefighter arrival the house was evacuated of all residents. Crews found moderate smoke coming from the attic and quickly established command of the incident. The house is a 2-story wood frame building. Crews took two firefighting hose lines into the house and battled the fire that was contained to one bedroom. The power was turned off at the electrical breaker box and the gas was turned off at the meter. Searches were completed on all levels of the house for fire travel and extension.
Two adult residents who were at home at the time of the fire were successfully evacuated. One resident sustained a minor foot injury while leaving the house and was treated and released at the scene. There were no other injuries reported. The two residents will be displaced and Red Cross was contacted to assist. There was moderate to heavy fire damage on the lower level of the house where the fire started and heavy smoke and heat damage on the upper level and throughout the rest of the house.
According to fire officials at the scene, the fire appears to be accidental in nature with a space heater as the probable ignition source.
**Gwinnett County Fire Department reminds residents to be cautious when using space heaters. Be sure to keep combustibles away from the heater while it is in use, turn off or unplug any units when you will not be able to monitor the use and if possible replace old units with newer ones that have the latest safety devices built into them.**
