Driver Arrested for Felony Vehicular Homicide and Felony Hit and Run

(Snellville, Georgia) Gwinnett County Police have charged 63 year old Phouvath Phounsavath of Norcross with Felony Vehicular Homicide and Felony Hit and Run. On August 7th around 9:30 PM, police responded to Annistown Road near Hidden Bluff Trail. Here 31 year old Shiquata Johnson of Atlanta was crossing Annistown Road when she was struck by two different vehicles. She was wearing dark clothing and was not in a crosswalk. Johnson was struck first by 29 year old Orane Lamont of Snellville who remained at the scene. Lamont was traveling eastbound in the left lane towards the Wal-Mart on Centerville Highway. Phounsavath was traveling in the right lane next to Lamont. After Johnson was struck by Lamont she was struck by Phounsavath. Phounsavath fled the scene.

After searching the area for a period of time, officers located Phounsavath in a church parking lot examining his vehicle. Phounsavath should have known that he struck a person and not another object.  He failed to notify the police of a collision. As a result, he was arrested and charged with Felony Vehicular Homicide and Felony Hit and Run. Speed, alcohol, and seatbelts are not contributing factors in this accident. The next of kin has been notified for the decedent. Drivers are urged to remember that leaving the scene of an accident is a crime. If you are involved in an accident that results in bodily injury, remain calm, call 911, and follow the instructions of dispatchers to render first aid. Georgia law states that you have a legal obligation to assist the injured person by calling 911 and reporting the accident to police.
