UPDATED Media Release: Adult Son Killed Father with Crowbar, Attacks Officer
Update #1, 06/23/2016, 9:30am: Joseph Allen Cook (age 40, Buford) was booked into the Gwinnett County Jail on Tuesday, June 22, at 10:39pm. He was charged with Murder and Aggravated Assault.
The lead investigator learned that Joseph’s father, Larry Cook (age 68, Buford), made the initial call into the 911 Center at 6:19pm. The dispatcher could hear yelling and someone requesting police. The phone line disconnected a few minutes later.
Within a few moments, another 911 call came into the 911 Center. The caller, a neighbor, stated that one man was beating the other man in the driveway of the home.
As the first responding officer was arriving on scene, a third 911 call came in. The caller stated that his neighbor just ran to his home and said that her son was beating her husband.
Joseph was taken into custody and the Gwinnett County Fire Department arrived to treat the victim. Once it was determined that Larry Cook had died as a result of his injuries, Homicide detectives were requested. Officers found a crowbar nearby.
While the detectives, Crime Scene Unit, and Medical Examiner’s Office were documenting the scene and interviewing witnesses, Joseph was being transported to Gwinnett County Police Headquarters for an interview. Shortly after arriving at GCPD Headquarters, the suspect punched a female officer. The officer was treated at Gwinnett Medical Center in Lawrenceville and released a short time later.
Joseph Cook will likely face additional charges for assaulting the officer once the full extent of her injuries are known. She is expected to be ok.
