GWINNETT COUNTY RECEIVES PRESTIGIOUS NATIONAL PLANNING AWARD FOR 2045 UNIFIED PLAN

(Lawrenceville, Ga., Oct. 23, 2025) – Gwinnett County’s 2045 Unified Plan received national recognition from the American Planning Association, earning the Daniel Burnham Award for a Comprehensive Plan.

Developed through an extensive public engagement process, the 2045 Unified Plan sets a strategic direction for Gwinnett’s future, establishing a roadmap for growth and development in one of the nation’s most diverse suburban communities.

“This national recognition reflects the vision and hard work that went into shaping Gwinnett’s future,” said Chairwoman Nicole Love Hendrickson. “I’m grateful to our Planning and Development team and the many residents who shared their insights throughout this process. The 2045 Unified Plan lays out a clear path for growth that keeps Gwinnett vibrant, connected, and prepared for what’s ahead.”

The Daniel Burnham Award, named for the influential urban planner, recognizes a comprehensive plan that advances the art and science of planning through exceptional vision, originality and implementation potential.

“The Gwinnett County 2045 Unified Plan demonstrates a clear commitment to reimagining suburban growth around an inclusive, community-centered vision,” said Robert J. Duffy, FAICP, chair of the 2025 APA National Planning Awards jury. “The plan creates thoughtful growth opportunities so every resident can access daily services and connect meaningfully with their community.”

The plan introduces the Daily Community Framework, which defines 87 distinct areas across Gwinnett. The framework focuses on how residents experience their communities each day, outlining strategies to improve mobility, expand access to goods and services and strengthen the sense of place throughout the county.

Since the plan’s adoption, Gwinnett County has been actively implementing this framework through initiatives including small area plans, zoning overlays and infrastructure strategies that better align land use decisions to capital investments.
