AFTERNOON BLAZE DAMAGES APARTMENTS

(Peachtree Corners, Ga., March 2, 2018) – Firefighters responded to a resident report of an apartment fire at the Lakeside Retreat Apartments, located in the 3300 block of Park Lake Lane, NW in Peachtree Corners.

Crews arrived to find a working fire in a two-story, wood-frame (8-unit) apartment building.  Occupants were in the process of evacuation when fire trucks arrived and no injuries were reported.  Firefighters quickly deployed fire attack hose lines and operated in the offensive mode to control the fire and protect exposures.  The fire was burning in two units and quickly spread to the attic via the wall and floor system.  The blaze caused heavy fire damage to two apartment units and extensive smoke and water damage in two adjoining units.  The remaining units of the building had some degree of smoke damage due to fire control efforts.  Firefighters had to open part of the wall and ceiling in the apartment units to establish a vantage point to stop the fire from spreading.  The primary fire and water damage is isolated to apartments on the right-side of the breezeway and firewall.

According to management at the complex, approximately 32 people (adults and children) occupy the building.  A crowd of onlookers stood by as firefighters worked during the evening hours dousing hot spots and conducting overhaul operations.  The American Red Cross was contacted to provide temporary assistance for the displaced occupants.

The blaze is believed to have originated in one of the apartment units; however, the exact cause is currently undetermined and is under investigation.  Fire Investigators are combing through the debris and talking with residents of the building and management representatives.
