MAN DROWNS IN LAKE LANIER AT EAST BANK

Firefighters responded at 6:52 p.m., to a report of a Jet Ski circling in the lake without an operator.  The Jet Ski was located in the water approximately 100 feet from the boat ramp.  The call was received by Corps Rangers who then notified Gwinnett 9-1-1.

Firefighters from Gwinnett and Hall Counties converged on the lake, along with Georgia DNR and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.   Hall County divers located the victim underwater about 30-40 feet from the boat ramp.  The victim is a male, age-21 and is from the Suwanee area.  He is attending college in Florida and was home visiting family for the Labor Day holiday.  According to the victim’s mother, he went to the lake this evening to ride the Jet Ski and that was the last time she saw him.  It is unknown whether the man experienced a medical emergency as he was attempting to dock the Jet Ski.  The man was not wearing a life jacket when he was found.  His life jacket and personal items were found with the Jet Ski.

The incident was turned over to Georgia DNR Law Enforcement for report handling.  Please contact the Georgia DNR Law Enforcement for additional information.  The Fire-PIO is unable to provide the victim’s identity or medical information due to federal patient privacy laws known as HIPAA.  The name of the victim and cause of death will be released by DNR officials or the Gwinnett County Medical Examiner’s Office when available.
