Officer Involved Shooting Ends With Suspect and Police K9 Both Shot and Killed

(Norcross, Ga., September 10, 2020) – The Gwinnett County Police Department was involved in a fatal officer involved shooting earlier this afternoon behind 1990 Willow trail Pkwy in Norcross.  Officers assigned to a detail investigating gang activity were at the location when they discovered a stolen vehicle with two occupants inside.  When an officer attempted to make contact with the two individuals they both ran from the officer in two separate directions.

Officers assigned to the SWAT Unit, including SWAT K9 Blue responded and began searching for a male suspect that fled into the woods behind the location.  During that search, SWAT K9 Blue located items from the suspect and tracked him to a location within the woods.  The suspect was given commands and at some point fired on officers.  Officers returned fire after being fired upon.  During the gunfire, K9 Blue and the suspect were both shot.  Both K9 Blue and the suspect were transported to hospitals where they both died from their injuries.  The second suspect that was seen running from the scene was not arrested.

This shooting will be investigated by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.  SWAT K9 Blue was the first full-time SWAT dedicated K9.  He was five years old and bravely served the citizens of Gwinnett County in the police department for over a year.
