GWINNETT COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS ROUNDUP

Improvement to roadways, looking for a way to reconnect communities and more

(Lawrenceville, Ga., Sept. 26, 2023) – The Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners acted on several new initiatives during their Sept. 19 meeting. Here is a recap of what was approved.

Roadway improvements underway for Suwanee Creek Road

A much-needed replacement of Suwanee Creek Road bridge over Bennett Creek is on its way, including the installation of sidewalks, curb and gutter, and drainage improvements. The $3.5 million contract was awarded to CMES, Inc., and is funded by the 2017 SPLOST Program.

Grant would fund study to reconnect communities

The Transportation Department was given approval to apply for a federal Reconnection Communities and Neighborhoods grant. If awarded, the grant will help fund a study of communities along I-85 between Jimmy Carter Boulevard and Beaver Ruin Road and identify opportunities to unite areas separated by the interstate. The $2 million grant requires up to $400,000 in local matching funds that would be funded by SPLOST.

Infrastructure improvements support Rowen, surrounding area

The Board approved another step in bringing sewer service to 600 acres in eastern Gwinnett County, including phase 1 of the Rowen knowledge community. Mid-South Builders was awarded a $2.8 million contract to install more than a mile of gravity sewer interceptor from Old Freemans Mill Road to the new Eastern Regional Infrastructure sewer.

Board acts to help prevent double ticketing

A resolution was approved to maintain compliance with the Gwinnett Police Department’s speed detection permit with the Georgia Department of Public Safety. If an officer writes a ticket or arrests a driver in a photo-enforced school zone, the driver would not be subject to also pay the civil monetary (automated enforcement) for the same violation.
