Bulky Items and White Goods

Customers must notify their designated hauler to schedule pickup of a bulky item or white good during weekdays from 8:00am to 5:00pm. There is no additional fee. Bulky items may include box springs, mattresses, and furniture. White goods may include appliances such as stoves, refrigerators, washers, and dryers.

Guidelines for proper disposal of white goods:

  • Empty all appliances of food and liquids,
  • Remove doors from refrigerators and freezers, and
  • Have freon gas removed and have refrigerator tagged by certified technician.

Backdoor Service

Backdoor service is a convenience provided to the households of persons who are physically unable to place their carts curbside. Please contact your hauler for further information if you or someone you know would benefit from backdoor service.

Holiday Collection Schedule

Trash and recycling collection will remain the same on holidays except New Year's Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. Haulers are not required to collect or maintain office hours on these holidays. Collections will be made the day following these holidays, and subsequent collection during the holiday week will take place on the day after the normal collection day. For more information, residents can contact their hauler or call the Solid Waste Management Call Center at 770.822.7141.

New Construction

Gwinnett County requires that contractors pay a Residential Service Fee to the County for collection, transportation, and disposal or processing of residential municipal solid waste, residential recovered materials, bulky waste, and/or white goods. A Certificate of Occupancy (CO) will be issued by Planning and Development after the Residential Service Fee has been paid and all other permit requirements have been met.

Payments may be made at the Solid Waste office located at 446 West Crogan Street, Suite 100, in Lawrenceville by check, cash, or credit card or by calling 770.822.7141 to pay by credit card.

Rates and Billing

The rate for residential solid waste and recycling service is $18.40 per month; $220.81 per year for basic service in 2021. After initially establishing service, payment will be made as part of the property tax bill.

The senior discount for those 62 and over is 25 percent of the hauler paid rate, which reduces fees for seniors to $14.11 per month. If you are not currently receiving the senior discount on your solid waste fee, an application and affidavit form must be submitted to Solid Waste Management located at 446 West Crogan Street, Suite 100, in Lawrenceville. To access the form, click here. You may also contact the Solid Waste Management office at 770.822.7141.

Curbside Guidelines

Trash and recyclables will be picked up between 7:00am and 6:30pm, Monday through Friday. Customers should place the provided trash carts and recycling carts curbside no earlier than 3:30pm the day before collection day but prior to 7:00am on collection day. Emptied carts must be removed no later than the day following collection day.

Trash Cart Placement

  • Trash carts should be placed within three feet of the curb or the edge of the street and at least three feet away from any obstacles, preferably on the opposite side of the driveway from the mailbox.
  • The lid opening should face the street.
  • The lid should be closed.

*Please note that trash outside of the cart will not be collected unless previously arranged with your hauler.

Recyclables

Recyclable items can be placed in another container at no extra charge as long as the container is clearly marked "recyclables." Haulers will not collect recyclables placed in plastic bags.

Guidelines for curbside recycling:

  • Place recycling cart on opposite side of mailbox next to the trash cart.
  • Rinse cans, bottles, and containers before placing in the recycling cart.
  • Put only acceptable materials in recycling cart—no sorting is required.
  • Break down large cardboard boxes and clearly mark as “Recyclables.”

Unacceptable Waste

Some types of waste may not be placed curbside for collection by residential haulers. Glass will no longer be accepted as part of recycling. Glass should be disposed of with household trash or taken to a separate facility that offers glass recycling. Please see the recycling directory for information on proper disposal of the items listed below.

  • Aerosol cans that are not empty
  • Ammunition of any type
  • Animals over 10 pounds

Yard waste collection is not included in basic service. If you elect optional yard waste collection on a 12-month basis, then you will receive a 25 percent discount. In this case, the optional service rate will be reduced from $10.00 per month to $7.50 per month. Application for the reduced yard waste rate must be submitted directly to your hauler.

Guidelines for yard waste collection:

  • Yard trimmings must be in paper bags.
  • Tree branches must be no more than four inches in diameter and three feet in length.
