One example of water conservation is a daily occurrence that most people don't even think about. Hundreds of thousands of homes and business are connected to the County's collection system. All the water leaving these places (e.g. showers, dishwashers, AC cooling, sinks) gets carried away through a series of pipes to one of the County's high level treatment plants. After this treatment, it is eventually discharged into one of Gwinnett's waterways. This is known as indirect potable reuse and occurs throughout the nation and world. Gwinnett averages a return of 40 million gallons per day in returned water to Lake Lanier alone. In addition to benefiting Gwinnett, which pulls raw water from the lake, it also helps several neighboring counties and cities that also use Lake Lanier as a water source.
