Share your heart and home with a loving shelter pet! Every year, countless stray, lost, abandoned, and surrendered animals arrive at the shelter, needing a safe place to land while they wait for their forever homes. By opening your heart and home as a foster caregiver, you give an animal comfort, stability, and love.
Foster a Pet
Foster Programs
Animals need foster care when they are too young or too small for sterilization and adoption, when they are recovering from an illness or injury, when they are still learning to trust people, or when they are in protective custody. Foster families receive all required supplies, along with any additional donated items, such as toys, bowls, and beds when available. Staff will provide an estimated care window when coordinating placement.
Items provided as needed:
- Food (dry, canned wet, and formula)
- Crate
- Litter

Some animals are determined to need extra care, which include those that are too young or frail to be adopted, injured, or ill. Animal Welfare and Enforcement partners with many local rescue organizations licensed by the state of Georgia Department of Agriculture to place these animals where they will receive special attention they need.
Often, through the hard work of the rescue organizations, these animals can be placed in good homes after they are rehabilitated. Email AnimalRescue@GwinnettCounty.com for more information.
