(Lawrenceville, Ga., March 11, 2026) – The Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners acted on several initiatives at their Feb. 3 and March 3 meetings. Highlights include new pickleball courts, improvements to Beaver Ruin Road and a continuation of the Gwinnett Place Mall site redevelopment.
Sewer upgrades to support Gwinnett Place Mall site
Commissioners approved a contract to enhance sewer capacity to support redevelopment at the Gwinnett Place Mall site. The project includes replacing and enlarging approximately 1.5 miles of sewer infrastructure along a Sweetwater Creek tributary from Breckinridge Boulevard to Club Drive, downstream from the mall. The $9.5 million contract was awarded to Reynolds Construction of Georgia LLC.
Improved travel on Beaver Ruin Road
The Board also approved a contract for the widening of Beaver Ruin Road from I-85 to Park Drive to improve travel. A third travel lane will be added in each direction, along with dual westbound right-turn lanes at the I-85 northbound on-ramp. Dual eastbound left-turn lanes will also be installed on Beaver Ruin Road at Steve Reynolds Boulevard and Shackleford Road.
Funding for the $5 million contract will come from County’s Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax Program and the Gateway85 Community Improvement District, using a Georgia Transportation Infrastructure Bank grant. Azimuth Contractors LLC will complete the work.
Pickleball courts coming to Bethesda Park
Pickleball players will soon have a new spot to play this popular sport. The Board approved the construction of six new pickleball courts at Bethesda Park in Lawrenceville, including new lighting, fencing, sidewalks and a small pavilion.
Located near the aquatic center at the back of the park, these courts will expand the County’s pickleball courts to 30 total. The $967,378 contract was awarded to J.G. Leone Enterprises Inc. Courts are currently available at E.E. Robinson Park and Rhodes Jordan Park, with more currently under construction at Lenora Park and West Gwinnett Park.
Software to improve criminal intelligence research
The Board approved a $1.3 million contract to implement Unified Crime Intelligence platforms for use by the Gwinnett County Police Department and Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office. These systems allow rapid searches across multiple data sources, delivering real-time operational intelligence within minutes rather than hours or days. This technology also provides insights into trends, improves efficiency, enables in-depth analysis and automates administrative tasks.
The contract covers implementation costs and support from Peregrine Technologies Inc.
Funding to support arts and creative economy initiatives
Gwinnett County is committed to strengthening community identity through arts and culture. To further goals of the 2045 Unified Plan, the County will provide $50,000 to Create Gwinnett Inc. — formerly Artworks Gwinnett — to help implement Gwinnett’s first-ever comprehensive Arts and Creative Economy Master Plan. This plan provides a roadmap for the arts in Gwinnett and features collaboration among local artists, businesses and residents.
Renovations on tap for Gwinnett County Public Library headquarters
The Gwinnett County Public Library headquarters at 1001 Lawrenceville Hwy. is undergoing a long-awaited interior renovation. The building, which previously also housed the Lawrenceville branch library, was left partially vacant after a move to new space at the Hooper-Renwick Themed Library last summer.
The renovation features upgrades to current offices and the addition of new offices to address County space planning efforts, along with roof and HVAC replacements, parking lot repairs and the installation of a natural gas generator. The $5.27 million contract was awarded to Multiplex LLC, with $2.4 million funded by SPLOST. Construction begins in April.
Resurfacing to begin for 181 miles of county roads
The County is beginning a resurfacing project for more than 181 miles of residential roads. Resurfacing includes patching, asphalt milling, asphalt topping, adjustment of water valves and manhole covers and the installation of pavement markings. The work will be completed in six sections by Sunbelt Asphalt Surfaces Inc. This $43 million project is funded by SPLOST.
