(August 11, 2014 @ 3:15am)- At around 10:20pm on August 10, 2014, a Gwinnett County police officer on patrol in the area of Dawson Blvd. and Graves Rd. observed a dark-colored sedan traveling at a high rate of speed. The officer caught up to the vehicle, activated his blue lights and initiated a traffic stop for the excessive speed. An occupant of the vehicle fired what the officer believed to shots before 3-5 more shots were fired and the officer saw muzzle flashes to match the “popping” sounds. The vehicle refused to pull over and the officer subsequently lost contact with the car.
A few minutes later a different officer made contact with a possible suspect vehicle near Sienna Heights Apartments on Graves Rd. The driver of that vehicle was arrested on traffic charges, but it is still unclear if the vehicle was involved in the earlier shooting.
The GCPD Crime Scene Unit responded to the area after shell casings were found in the area of the original traffic stop attempt. Detectives also responded and they are actively working the case. The involved officer, a veteran with several years of experience, was not harmed in the incident nor were any citizens. The investigation continues and further details will be released as information is obtained and is releasable.
