Learn More(Buford, Georgia) On Wednesday, December 2, shortly after 10pm, officers assigned to the North Precinct and GCFD were dispatched to a traffic accident in front of 1180 Buford Highway in Buford. When the officers arrived on scene, they found that two vehicles had collided; one vehicle was on fire. The fire was extinguished and GCFD worked to treat the occupants of the vehicles.
Ultimately, GCFD found an 11-year old male deceased inside one of the vehicles. Four other people were suffering from serious injuries. The injured persons were transported to Gwinnett Medical Center – Lawrenceville. Members of the Accident Investigation Unit were called in to investigate the collision.
The lead investigator determined the following during the preliminary investigation:
The driver of a silver Subaru Legacy, Yagi Fumio (age 28, Suwanee) was traveling south on Buford Highway toward Suwanee.
The driver of a silver Honda Accord, Mateo Caymol (age 47, Suwanee) was traveling north on Buford Highway toward Buford. Andrew Caymol (age 11) was seated in the front passenger seat. Matthew Caymol (age 13) was seated behind Andrew in the backseat.
A deer emerged from the right side of the roadway in the path of the silver Subaru Legacy. The deer and the Subaru collided. The Subaru swerved into the northbound lane colliding with the silver Honda Accord. Both vehicles struck one another head-on. The Honda caught fire after impact.
Andrew Caymol sustained serious injuries as a result of the collision and died at the scene. Death notification has been made to his next-of-kin.
At this point in the investigation, the lead investigator does not believe that Andrew or Matteo were using seatbelts inside the vehicle. It is still unknown if Matthew was restrained.
Both vehicles were removed from the scene and transported to Gwinnett County Police Headquarters.
As of last night, no charges have been filed against either driver.
