(Tuesday, December 07, 2010 @ approximately 11:15 am) The Gwinnett County Police Robbery Unit and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) are investigating an armed robbery of an armored car courier at an ATM located inside the Mall of Georgia. This is located in an unincorporated area of Buford in Gwinnett County.
The preliminary investigation into this armed robbery revealed that two armed armored car couriers for Dunbar Armored Car entered the Mall of Georgia to service an ATM near the ticket booth for Regal Cinema. One of the couriers began to service the machine as the other stood guard nearby. A black male approached the guards as if he were going to exit through a double set of doors next to the machine. Once the male got to the doors, he brandished a handgun and pointed it at the courier servicing the machine. The male grabbed the money bag and began his exit through the double doors. The second courier drew his weapon and fired one round and missed the male as he escaped out an exit to the backside of the mall and left. There were no injuries reported from this incident. The male suspect in this robbery presented a deadly situation against one of the couriers. The other courier responded to that deadly threat by firing a round at the male suspect. It is believed at this time that the courier acted in self defense and is not facing any charges. The FBI responded to the scene and has taken the lead for this investigation. The Gwinnett County Police Robbery Unit and Crime Scene Unit assisted the FBI with this investigation. It is believed that this robbery is connected to at least 4 other armored car/ATM robberies that have occurred in the past several weeks. This is the 3rd in Gwinnett County. The other two occurred in Atlanta and Marietta.
The male suspect left the area in a black late model Buick Lacrosse with chrome wheels and tinted windows. He was described as a black male, 25-30 years of age, 5'-9" to 6'-2", stocky build and weighed between 200-250 lbs. He has a dark complexion and is clean shaven with a close haircut. He was wearing a black cap, black zip up jacket with dark jeans and white sneakers. He displayed a black and grey .9mm semi-auto pistol that is believed to be a Ruger. Please see the attached photos of the vehicle as it left the scene.
Anyone with information about this incident or others is encouraged to call the FBI or Gwinnett County Police Department. Please contact Special Agent Stephen Emmett with the FBI for further details in reference to this robbery as well as the others.
