The Gwinnett County Police Department will participate in the DEA National Drug Take-Back Initiative Saturday, April 22, 2023. This initiative aims to combat increased overdose deaths during the COVID-19 Pandemic. People who drop off will not be asked questions about their medical history or how they obtained the medications. 

The National Drug Take-Back Initiative will allow the community to drop off potentially dangerous prescription medication at designated collection points. Unused or expired prescription medications are a public safety issue that can lead to accidental poisoning, overdose, and abuse. In addition, many teenagers that abuse prescription drugs get them from family or friends’ home medicine cabinets.

The partnership between GCPD and DEA aims to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs. It is designed for people who want to get rid of medications but need a way to dispose of them properly. Unused drugs that are flushed down the toilet can contaminate the water supply. The proper disposal of unused drugs can save lives and protect the environment. When drugs are disposed of in the trash, they often end up in landfills and pose a contamination hazard through soil absorption.

There will be collection points at GCPD Headquarters, five police precincts, and a local church. The collection times are from 10:00 AM until 2:00 PM. No appointment is necessary during these times. Our collection sites can accept tablets, capsules, patches, and other prescription drugs for proper disposal. Liquids, syringes, sharps, and other drugs will not be accepted.
