(Norcross, Georgia) At approximately 3 AM this morning, Gwinnett County Police officers responded to a hit and run call in the area of Jimmy Carter Blvd near I-85. Shortly thereafter, an officer in the area of Jimmy Carter Blvd near Brook Hollow Parkway saw a vehicle driving erratically. The driver of the vehicle was coming from the direction of the hit and run scene. The officer attempted to initiate a traffic stop by activating his emergency equipment. The driver of the vehicle did not stop and accelerated away from the officer. At that point, the officer deactivated his emergency equipment and lost sight of the vehicle. Several seconds later, the officer saw the same vehicle on fire in the parking lot of Malibu Grand Prix. The vehicle struck a parked car and ignited. Several officers pulled the driver from the burning vehicle. The driver died at the scene. The identity of the driver is still pending. The Accident Investigation Unit is investigating the accident. It is believed that alcohol was a contributing factor to the fatal vehicle accident.
