Officer Chris Magill Traffic Detail

(Gwinnett County, Georgia)  On May 21, the Gwinnett County Police Department along with officers from Lilburn Police Department, Suwanee Police Department, Duluth Police Department, Georgia State Patrol, and the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s office came together to honor Officer Chris Magill.  Magill was killed in the line of duty by a drink driver on May 23, 1993.

The annual Officer Chris Magill Traffic Detail focused on the Georgia Move Over Law, a law designed to require motorists to move over for stopped emergency vehicles and tow truck drivers.  Officer Magill was killed when a drunk driver slammed into the rear of his stopped patrol car on I-85 near Jimmy Carter Boulevard.  The children of Officer Chris Magill, Jim and Amy Magill, attended the roll-call and thanked all the officers in attendance for remembering their dad and working to keep the community safe.

The night began with a “Move Over” Detail along 1-85 from the Barrow County line to the DeKalb County line and along other major corridors throughout Gwinnett County.  Motorists were stopped for violations including speeding, seatbelt violations, texting while driving and other traffic infractions.

The night culminated with a checkpoint on Jimmy Carter Boulevard and Live Oak Parkway.  Numerous arrests were made and several wanted persons were located.

A motorist was stopped after trying to avoid the checkpoint.  A sawed off shotgun was located in the car after the driver attempted to run on foot from the vehicle.  GSP, GCSO K9 units, GCPD helicopter, and other GCPD units quickly established a perimeter and the GCSO K9 units were able to track the suspect where he was apprehended a short distance away.

This event was successful and raised awareness and education about the Move Over Law.
