Officer Chris Magill Traffic Detail

(Lawrenceville, Georgia)  In 2008, the Gwinnett County Police Department began an annual tradition of honoring one of our fallen officers by conducting the Officer Chris Magill Traffic Detail.

On May 23, 1993, Officer Chris Magill was killed in the line of duty.  He was on I-85 waiting for a tow truck to impound a vehicle from a DUI arrest.  While he was waiting, another intoxicated motorist struck his vehicle in the rear, killing him.  At the time of his death, Magill had over 18 years of law enforcement experience.  This marked the 4th Line of Duty Death for the Gwinnett County Police Department.

The detail was held between 9pm on Friday, May 29th and 6am on Saturday, May 30th.  This year’s focus was on aggressive traffic enforcement along I-85, I-985, and SR 316.  The detail concluded with a sobriety check-point in Norcross.  Nearly twenty officers (many of whom were on their scheduled off-days) and one radio dispatcher committed their time to protecting the lives of our motoring public.

Due to this targeted enforcement, the officers made 11 arrests and wrote 109 citations.  Below is a break-down of those charges:

  • DUI: 8
  • Drug-Related: 2
  • Suspended Licenses: 3
  • Speeding: 14
  • Move Over Violations: 55
  • Other: 27

The Gwinnett County Police Department is committed to educating motorists about the dangers of committing traffic violations.  Through the use of traffic enforcement, we are helping to assure that all motorists get to their intended destinations as safely as possible.
