(Tuesday, March 9^th, 2010@ approximately 3:35 PM) A Gwinnett County Police Officer on routine patrol observed a violation of traffic law and initiated a stop of the vehicle in violation.  During the course of the ensuing on scene investigation, the officer observed a device that appeared suspicious in design.  Consequently, the Gwinnett County Police Department activated its Explosive Ordinance Disposal Unit (EOD) to investigate further.  This incident occurred on Dawson Boulevard, near its intersection with Graves Road.  This is an unincorporated area of Gwinnett County associated with Norcross.   

At approximately 3:35 PM a Gwinnett County Police Officer, on routine patrol, observed a traffic violation and initiated a stop of a 1995 green colored Saturn sedan.  During the course of his subsequent interaction with the driver, the lone occupant of this vehicle, the officer became wary of the individual.  While interacting with him, the officer observed a suspicious looking object within the vehicle.  When questioned about the nature of the device, the driver admitted to having possessed devices of an explosive nature in the past.  However, he denied this device was destructive in nature.  Due to the character of the officer's suspicions and the appearance of the device, the driver was detained and the area cordoned off.  Out of an abundance of caution, the Police Department's Explosive Ordinance Disposal Unit (EOD) was notified.  Members of this unit determined the description of the device and the circumstances surrounding its discovery warranted further investigation.  The EOD Unit did respond to the scene.  Utilizing a robot the EOD Unit did remotely examine and subsequently recover the device from within the vehicle.  The device was evaluated and found to pose no immediate threat to the safety of personnel.  Samples from the device were retained for analysis and further investigation. 

The driver of the vehicle was arrested for driving without a license and violation of Georgia's open container law.  Investigation into this incident continues in an effort to determine if the suspect had any specific intent or purpose in possessing an item potentially resembling an improvised explosive device.  There are no indications that the suspect had any terroristic intent or purpose. At this time the suspect's name is being withheld.
