Celebrate Gwinnett Parks and Recreation 40th Anniversary

page-img

In 1986, Gwinnett County voted to invest in parks and recreation — not just to create green spaces, but to build places where people could connect, play, and grow together. From the first playgrounds and ballfields to today’s award-winning parks, trails, aquatic centers, and recreation centers, Gwinnett Parks and Recreation has been part of the county’s story for four decades.

As we celebrate our 40th anniversary, we look back with pride at the milestones we’ve shared —families gathering for time spent outdoors, children learning to swim and play ball, seniors finding community, and volunteers lending a hand to keep our parks beautiful. Every memory, program, and park has helped shape Gwinnett into the vibrant and welcoming place it is today.

This anniversary isn’t just about where we’ve been, it’s about who we are and where we’re going. The future of Gwinnett Parks and Recreation is filled with new opportunities to explore, connect, and thrive. Throughout 2026, we’ll honor the past while embracing the future with a year-long celebration of special events and community moments.

Join us as we celebrate 40 years of building community, creating belonging, and inspiring the next generation.

In September 2022, Gwinnett County joined the ranks of elite park and recreation agencies across the country by earning accreditation through the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA) and the National Recreation and Park Association.

CAPRA measures an agency’s overall quality of operation, management, and service to the community.
The accreditation indicates an agency has met rigorous standards related to the management and administration of lands, facilities, resources, programs, safety, and services.

As part of the accreditation process, Gwinnett Parks and Recreation demonstrated compliance with more than 150 recognized standards and documented all policies and procedures. For more information about CAPRA accreditation, visit NRPA.org/CAPRA.
