The Office of Professional Standards oversees applicant background investigations and reviews serious allegations of employee misconduct through two units: the Background Investigations and Recruiting Unit and the Internal Affairs Unit. The recruiting unit fills sworn and non-sworn positions and works with the County’s Department of Human Resources to identify qualified candidates.
The Internal Affairs Unit maintains records on all allegations of misconduct, uses of force, and vehicle pursuits. It also investigates serious misconduct cases and may conduct internal investigations for other County departments and city governments. The department treats all allegations seriously; individuals with concerns or questions may contact an Internal Affairs Investigator by e-mail or at 770.513.5500, and procedures for filing complaints or commendations are posted at each precinct.
The Records Unit is responsible for the maintenance, processing, storage, and destruction of all files, records, and documents submitted to the unit. These would include citations, incident reports, accident reports, investigator’s reports, Uniform Crime Reporting, and other official police reporting as directed.
The Georgia Crime Information Center (GCIC) Unit is responsible for maintaining computerized files on stolen property, wanted persons, missing persons, and other information on the state and national computer system. This unit functions twenty-four hours a day. The Records/GCIC Manager is also responsible for state and federal uniform crime reporting, Police Records retention and destruction, and processing criminal history records restriction requests for the department.
Georgia Open Records Law makes most basic incident reports public records, however, in some cases there are exceptions in the law that do not permit us to release reports to the general public.
