The Special Operations Section is a support services section assigned to the Uniform Division and is made up of the following specialized units:
Accident Investigation Unit

Investigates all hit-and-run, fatal, and life-threatening injury motor vehicle accidents.

Operates a telephone hotline that allows citizens to provide information anonymously regarding hit-and-run incidents.

Aviation Unit

Provides aerial support to uniform patrol officers responding to criminal activity.

Offers general aviation support to all divisions within Gwinnett County Government.

Based at Briscoe Field/Gwinnett County Airport.

DUI Task Force

Works to prevent serious injury and fatal crashes by identifying and apprehending impaired drivers.

Also enforces other traffic laws that commonly contribute to motor vehicle accidents.

Hazardous Device Unit (HDU)

Serves as the department’s bomb squad.

Responds to suspicious packages and suspected or confirmed explosive devices.

Honor Guard and Chorale

Acts as the Department’s ceremonial unit, utilizing specialized training, equipment, and distinctive uniforms.

Responsible for planning and conducting ceremonial functions, including department events and funerals for department members.

The Chorale performs the National Anthem at special events.

K-9 Unit

Consists of 10 police canine teams supporting the Uniform and Criminal Investigations Divisions.

Primary responsibilities include tracking missing or wanted persons, locating evidence or lost property, conducting building searches, serving high-risk warrants, and detecting illegal narcotics.

Includes a K-9 team trained in explosive detection that supports the Hazardous Device Unit.

Motorcycle (Motors) Unit

Focuses on reducing motor vehicle accidents through targeted enforcement of Georgia traffic laws.

Provides additional police presence at special events, assists with traffic control at major incidents, offers executive protection for visiting dignitaries, and investigates traffic complaints across all five police districts.
