Gwinnett County recognizes the legacy Black labor and family reunions.

The 2025 national theme for Black History Month is "African Americans and Labor." Gwinnett County will showcase the connection between African American Labor and Black family reunions at this year’s Black History Month heritage celebration.

On Wednesday, February 19 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, Gwinnett will host an evening of soul food, music, and a cultural exhibit displayed throughout the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center.  The event's keynote speaker is Dr. Terrence Roberts, one of the "Little Rock Nine.” This event is now sold out.

Black History Month originated as "Negro History Week" by historian Carter G. Woodson in 1926, intended to highlight the overlooked achievements of African Americans. It was later expanded to a month-long celebration in February, chosen to coincide with the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln, both significant figures in the fight against slavery.
