What began as a personal project by a local teen to help children in need turned into a powerful moment of community recognition and corporate generosity.

Nehemiah Hamilton, a recent graduate of the Gwinnett Youth Commission’s 10th Cohort and the Gwinnett County State Court’s SMILE program, launched The Little Things — a project to collect toiletries, school supplies and other essentials for children in foster care.

Inspired by a conversation with Chairwoman Nicole Love Hendrickson, Nehemiah partnered with the nonprofit Because One Matters to make sure the donated items went directly to children and teens in need. Recently, he arrived at the organization’s location to present his collection, unaware that a major surprise was waiting for him.

As Nehemiah stood with family, supporters, and County leaders, Because One Matters founder Andrea Barclay revealed that his efforts had caught the attention of Amazon. Moments later the pair walked to an awaiting Amazon delivery truck carrying a large-scale donation inspired by Nehemiah’s service.

The Amazon donation included 3,600 essential items and 50 backpacks filled with school supplies -- all going directly to youth supported by Because One Matters.

“This is what leadership looks like,” said Chairwoman Hendrickson, who attended the event. “Nehemiah’s story shows that it doesn’t matter how old you are — you can still be a force for good in your community. And what a beautiful example of public, private, and personal sectors working together to uplift others.”

Terreta Rodgers, Amazon’s Head of Community Affairs for the Atlanta Region, said the company was deeply moved by Nehemiah’s commitment.

“Seeing a young person take initiative and give back in such a selfless way moved all of us,” said Rodgers. “Nehemiah reminded us that big change can start with one small act. Amazon is proud to be part of honoring that.”

Nehemiah, who has experienced housing insecurity himself, said the recognition was unexpected, but deeply meaningful.

“I just wanted to help,” Hamilton said. “To see so many people come together to support kids in foster care means a lot to me, and I hope it inspires other young people to get involved.
