The Department of Planning and Development offers several online services including searching for applications or permits. By using the application number, your are able to check on the status of an application through the Department of Planning and Development's online permit searching service.

Fire Prevention and Protection Ordinance
The Gwinnett County Fire Plan Review Section uses the following codes: 2012 Gwinnett County Fire Prevention and Protection Ordinance, the current edition of the NFPA Codes and Standards as adopted and modified by the State Fire Marshal, NFPA 101 Life Safety Code 2012 Edition, International Fire Code 2012 Edition, OCGA Titles 25 and 30 Georgia Accessibility Code.

Motion Picture and Filming Permits
Gwinnett County Fire Plan Review and Fire Marshal’s Office has adopted NFPA 140 in addition to other NFPA Standards, International Fire Code, and Life Safety Code governing Motion Picture Television Production Studio Soundstages, Approved Production Facilities, and Production Locations. Permits are required at all locations conducting these activities.

Separate permits shall be required for Special Effects, Flame Effects, Sets, Storage, and Tents in excess of 400 square feet.

A completed Film Application shall be submitted to Fire Plan Review and any filming in buildings shall require a Temporary Use Occupancy Permit.

Procedures For Obtaining A Permit

Fire Alarm System Permitting Requirements
The Gwinnett County Fire Plan Review Section uses the NFPA Life Safety Code 101, 2012 Edition, and the National Fire Alarm Code NFPA 72, 2013 Edition. Fire Sprinkler Systems And Rack Storage Permitting Requirements
Fire Plan Review uses NFPA 13, 2013 Edition.  Please complete the Automatic Fire Sprinkler System Worksheet and submit the form with your sprinkler system plans. For sprinkler system or rack storage questions, please contact  Jim Egan at 678.518.6121 or email

Commercial Kitchen Hood Requirements
Any commercial establishment that produces grease-laden vapors or smoke requires a kitchen ventilation system. A permit shall be obtained from the Gwinnett County Fire Plan Review Section before the installation of a system. This permit will be issued to an appropriate licensed contractor.
