Grease Management Program

The Department of Water Resources' Grease Management Program exists to protect the county's wastewater collection system from elicit fats, oils, and grease discharge that may cause serious damage and expense. Fats, oils, and grease clog pipes, lift stations, and treatment plants. This damage can cause sewer overflows where raw sewage is discharged into the county's water ways. The removal of fats, oils, and grease from treatment plan influent is very expensive and may affect wastewater treatment plants ability to meet their discharge limits.

The Grease Management Program is tasked with ensuring that commercial users of the wastewater collection system have properly sized interception capacity and conduct proper maintenance of the interceptor. All new commercial facilities whether a new building or new owners of existing facilities must have their grease trap capacity reviewed before a permit is granted to tie into the collection system. This capacity is determined by the size of the facility as well as the equipment used and menu items served. The Gwinnett County Fats, Oils and Grease (FOG) Ordinance contains specific requirements for fats, oils, and grease mitigation. For additional information or questions, please call the Gwinnett County Department of Water Resources at 678.376.6713.
