What is a Sewer Lateral?

A private sewer lateral connects the interior plumbing of a home or business to the public sewer maintained by the Gwinnett County Department of Water Resources (DWR). The private lateral extends to the edge of the right-of-way. Property owners are responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the entire lateral even if a portion of it is under the pavement.

Public sewers are usually under the roadway or on easements crossing private property. The private lateral and public sewer are part of the collection system that carries wastewater from homes and businesses to the treatment facilities.

Gwinnett County also requires a 6-inch cleanout on the lateral, which is usually located near the edge of the property and may also require one near the building. This allows the line to be inspected or cleared of any blockages.
