GWINNETT HONORS BLACK HISTORY MONTH AT HERITAGE NIGHT CELEBRATION

(Lawrenceville, Ga., Feb.14, 2025) – Gwinnett County recognizes Black History Month each year in February by highlighting the contributions and history of African Americans in our community.

This year's national theme, African Americans and Labor, will be explored locally through the traditions of Black family reunions and their deep connections to shared history, resilience and labor.

Dr. Terrence Roberts, a member of the Little Rock Nine, will deliver the keynote address at Gwinnett's annual Black History Month Heritage Night Celebration on Wednesday, Feb. 19, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center in Lawrenceville.

The Little Rock Nine were a group of Black students who integrated Little Rock Central High School in 1957, facing fierce opposition as they challenged segregation in public education.

Black History Month is an annual celebration recognizing the achievements and contributions of Black Americans. It traces its origins to Negro History Week, established in 1926 by historian Carter G. Woodson. The celebration expanded to a full month in 1976 during the U.S. Bicentennial,

with President Gerald Ford urging Americans to honor the impact of Black history on the nation.
