GWINNETT FIRE AND EMERGENCY SERVICES AFTERNOON FIRE BRIEFS - THURSDAY, AUGUST 27, 2015

(Lawrenceville, Ga., August 27, 2015) – The following is a brief synopsis of the most significant fire and emergency services response activity for the afternoon of Thursday, August 27, 2015.

MINOR SCHOOL FIRE:

Firefighters responded at 2:31p.m., to a report of a fire alarm activated at Trickum Middle School, located at 130 Killian Hill Road, SW in Lilburn.  Crews found the large educational building evacuated on arrival.  School staff notified fire crews of a small fire in the boy’s bathroom that was doused by a custodian with a portable fire extinguisher.  Firefighters found smoke inside the bathroom and a hallway upon making entry.  Per Fire Investigators, it appears that someone intentionally set fire to a plastic toilet paper dispenser inside a bathroom stall.  The fire melted the dispenser and damaged a partition wall and two large rolls of paper.  Fire Investigators are working jointly with School Resources Officers and Administrators to determine the individual(s) responsible.  There were no injuries reported and no damage to the structure.  The investigation is ongoing.  School staff and students did a great job of following the fire evacuation plan and with getting everyone safely out of the building.

Equipment at the scene included: 1-Engine, 1-Ladder Truck, 1-Battalion Chief and 1-Fire Investigator.

SCHOOL BUS ACCIDENT:

Firefighters responded at 2:34p.m., to a report of a school bus accident on Old Peachtree Road, NW and Lawrenceville Suwanee Road in Suwanee.  Crews found a special needs bus from Gwinnett County Public Schools and a passenger car involved on arrival.  There was obvious damage to both vehicles.  Two patients were evaluated by paramedics for minor injuries.  The driver of the passenger car denied transport and was released at the scene.  An adult on the school bus was transported to the hospital for further evaluation of a minor injury.  The driver of the bus and several students onboard were not hurt.  The scene was turned over to Suwanee Police for report handling.

Equipment at the scene included: 1-Engine, 1-Medic Unit and 1-Battalion Chief.

HOUSE FIRE:

Firefighters responded at 3:15p.m., to a report of a house fire in the 2600 block of Eastmont Trail, SW in Snellville.  On arrival, crews found an active bedroom fire in a two-story wood frame house over a crawl-space.  Firefighters made immediate entry to quickly control the fire and conduct a primary search.  The fire was contained to the one-room and sent smoke throughout the house.  The fire caused moderate damage to the room and contents.  An adult occupant was home when the fire erupted and escaped unharmed.  The occupant was evaluated and released at the scene by paramedics for a minor medical condition unrelated to the fire.  The exact cause the fire is currently undetermined and is under active investigation.

Equipment at the scene included: 3-Engines, 1-Ladder Truck, 1-Squad, 1-Air & Light Unit, 1-Medic Unit, 2-Battalion Chiefs and 2-Fire Investigators.
