TRAFFIC TO SHIFT ON SR 20 AS DOT NEARS END OF WIDENING PROJECT

(Lawrenceville, Ga., Aug. 23, 2016) – Drivers on State Route 20 near Sugar Hill will encounter some delays Thursday evening as the Gwinnett County Department of Transportation shifts traffic to continue widening the state highway’s last two-lane section in the county.

The lane change, which is scheduled to occur between 8 p.m. and midnight Aug. 25, will impact about three miles of roadway. The shift will occur between Suwanee Dam Road and Peachtree Industrial Boulevard, allowing crews to wrap up work on the two new lanes of the project in that stretch. Flaggers will be in the area to help guide traffic as needed.

District 1 Commissioner Jace Brooks said, “I’m pleased to see these traffic shifts occurring because it means this important project is getting closer to completion.”

The Gwinnett County construction stretches about four miles from Peachtree Industrial Boulevard to Burnette Trail. Access to the Chattahoochee River bridge will be maintained at all times as Georgia DOT contractors work on a separate project to widen across the river into Forsyth County. Gwinnett County worked with the Georgia DOT to complete the engineering on both projects.

Federal, state and local dollars were used to fund these projects. Just across the river, Forsyth County is partnering with the state to widen from James Burgess Road to Samples Road.

“Additional traffic shifts will be required before all the lanes can open to traffic,” said Gwinnett Department of Transportation Director Alan Chapman. Another traffic shift is expected in early September.

Construction on Gwinnett’s section of the project is expected to be complete by early next year, according to Chapman. The Georgia DOT section is to be complete by mid-2017.

Traffic shift section by section:

  • Peachtree Industrial Boulevard to Arbor View Way – Traffic will be shifted to the outside lanes of the new configuration.  Traffic will be separated by the median and will allow the contractor to complete median work.
  • Arbor View Way to Bellagio Drive/Henry Bailey Connector Road – Eastbound and westbound traffic will be shifted to the westbound lanes.
  • Bellagio Drive/Henry Bailey Connector Road to Henry Bailey Road/Emerald Parkway – Eastbound and westbound traffic will be shifted to the eastbound lanes.
