The Fire Academy focuses on all areas of employee development, beginning with initial fire training and continuing along a specified career path. Additional in-service training programs and continuing education opportunities are also provided.
The Fire Academy's facilities include a burn building, training tower, apparatus building, drafting pit, low speed driving course and classrooms. These facilities allow for a variety of training courses in both classroom settings and practical situations. The staff maintains the department's standard of service excellence and strives to achieve the highest criteria of training and education to better serve the citizens of Gwinnett County.
New firefighters begin their careers with the department by attending a full time, comprehensive fire recruit school along with emergency Medical Technician training at the National Registry EMT-I level. New employees who were previously employed by a career fire department and completed significant amounts of training equivalent to that of Gwinnett County may qualify for the "Lateral Academy" program.
Through a cooperative agreement with Gwinnett Technical College, firefighter/EMT candidates may choose to pursue a firefighter/EMT diploma including some courses that will meet fire science or paramedic degree requirements. As employees progress through their career path and prepare for promotion, many of the courses required for promotional eligibility may be met by participation in fire science degree courses.
