Robbery Suspect Barricaded Himself in Apartment

(Duluth, Georgia)  The Gwinnett County Police Department SWAT Team was activated early this morning for a barricaded robbery suspect.  The suspect called 911 around 12:30am this morning and spoke with the call-taker.  He told the call-taker that he had just robbed a local convenience store gas station.

Once uniform officers showed up at his home in the 600 building, he requested to speak with a negotiator.  Once the negotiator began speaking with the suspect, he cut off conversation.  At one point, the suspect said that police would have to kill him to take him into custody.

While negotiations were in progress, a police officer went to the convenience store gas station to confirm that they were robbed.  They told the officer that they got robbed earlier but had not called 911.

The SWAT Team was activated around 3:00am.  The officers continued to try to negotiate with the suspect during the entire ordeal.  The suspect’s name is Obafemi Temitope Jaji (age 29, Duluth).  Once the SWAT Team breached the door to the apartment, they could see that Jaji had a firearm in his hand.  Careful consideration was given to ensure that the members of the SWAT Team were adequately protected while interacting with the suspect.

The main objective in these events is to preserve the lives of everyone involved, including the suspect.  At around 8:30am, Jaji was taken into custody and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.  He was treated by members of the Gwinnett County Fire Department while at the scene and eventually transported to Gwinnett Medical Center in Lawrenceville.  He faces one count of Robbery by Intimidation and one count of Theft by Taking.  Once he is released from the hospital, he will be transported to the Gwinnett County Jail.

It’s unclear what his motivations were in robbing the store, calling 911, or trying to get the officers to come to his home.
