Double Fatality - Collision

(Lawrenceville, Georgia)  On Saturday, March 26, officers assigned to the East Precinct were dispatched to a traffic accident with injuries at the intersection of Duluth Highway (SR120) and McKendree Church Road in unincorporated Lawrenceville.  When the officers arrived, they found a yellow Scion and a silver Chevrolet Impala with heavy damage.

The driver of the silver Chevrolet, Frankie Turner (age 80, Norcross) was initially unresponsive.  Her passenger husband, James Turner (age 83, Norcross) was conscious, but seriously injured.  Both were transported to Gwinnett Medical Center in Lawrenceville for treatment.

The driver of the yellow Scion, Alen Beganovic (age 17, Lawrenceville) had minor injuries and was treated at the scene.

The lead investigator determined the following:

  • Frankie Turner was traveling east on Duluth Highway toward Lawrenceville.  Beganovic was traveling south on McKendree Church Road in the direction of Duluth Highway.  Beganovic swerved left to avoid colliding with a vehicle that was stopped at a stop sign. After swerving, he drove through the stop sign and traveled across 5 lanes of traffic before colliding with the Chevrolet.  Beganovic struck the driver’s side door of the Chevrolet.  The impact of the collision pushed the Chevrolet across two lanes and onto a curb.

Several hours later, the responding officer was told that James Turner died as a result of his injuries.  On Sunday, March 27, Frankie Turner also died as a result of her injuries.

Alen Beganovic was placed under arrest and initially charged with the following:

  • Vehicular Homicide
  • Serious Injury by Vehicle (will likely be dismissed and indicted for Vehicular Homicide)
  • Reckless Driving
  • Failure to Obey Stop Sign
  • Failure to Maintain Lane

He bonded out of jail on Saturday shortly before midnight (before Frankie’s death).

Both vehicles were impounded to the Gwinnett County Police Headquarters.
