Building Inspections Section
The Building Inspections Section (structures, plumbing, electrical and HVAC) is responsible for all building construction related inspections with the goal to protect life, limb, property, and adherence to applicable codes. This goal is accomplished through identifying structural strength and stability, establishing viable means of egress, proper sanitation control, adequate lighting and ventilation, energy conservation, and personal property safety from fire and other hazards.

The Department of Planning and Development plans to make changes to the procedure for inspecting smoke and carbon monoxide alarms for one- and two-family dwellings effective 8/1/2013 (for smoke alarms) and 1/1/2014 (for carbon monoxide alarms). Click here for details.

  • For building inspections, contact Department of Planning and Development staff at (678) 518-6002 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Monday – Friday).
  • For fire inspections, contact the Fire Marshal’s office at (678) 518-4980 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Monday – Friday).

To establish a set time range for a scheduled building inspection, contact the assigned inspector at (678) 518-6050 during 7 – 7:30 a.m. on the morning of the scheduled inspection date.  For further assistance, building inspectors can be reached at (678) 518-6050 during 7 – 7:30 a.m. and 3 – 4 p.m. (Monday – Friday).

Changes to the Special Inspection Process for New Commercial Buildings
Effective Monday, October 1, 2012, the Department of Planning and Development will implement several changes to the special inspections process for new commercial buildings in accordance with the Georgia State Minimum Standard Building Code (Chapter 17). Supplemental documentation prepared by design professionals, contractors, and special inspectors may be required during permitting and construction.
