The Gwinnett Department of Transportation was awarded a $1,053,400 Strengthening Mobility and Revolutionizing Transportation grant from the United States Department of Transportation.

The SMART grant will be used to examine safety and mobility technological solutions — such as focused lighting and warnings — for all roadway users along Singleton Road.

“We look forward to developing and implementing innovative technologies to enhance the safety of pedestrians and transit users along Singleton Road,” said Gwinnett Department of Transportation Director Lewis Cooksey. “This SMART grant will provide us the ability to find creative solutions that work for the residents of this corridor, and ultimately throughout the county as part of our ongoing effort to ensure Gwinnett is the preferred community where everyone thrives.”

Funding will also be used to update the County’s Connected Vehicle Technology Master Plan, which previously identified smart corridor deployment.

“Gwinnett leverages its planning efforts and transportation improvements with innovation,” said Chairwoman Nicole Love Hendrickson. “The SMART grant will allow us to update our former plans and implement solutions to ensure safe, efficient, and smooth travel across the county.”

Senator Reverend Warnock, Senator Jon Ossoff, and Representative Lucy McBath supported the County in securing the federal funding to upgrade its transportation infrastructure.

The SMART Grant Program provides grants for projects that improve transportation efficiency and safety through advanced smart community technologies and systems.
