The Field Operations division includes: Water Distribution, Waste Water Collections, Sanitary Sewer Evaluations, Meter Services, Backflow Prevention compliance and inspections, and Dispatch. This division fosters cooperative working relationships among DWR departments, intergovernmental and regulatory agencies, and various public and private groups. The Field Operations division employs approximately 185 full-time employees that provide water and sewer services to approximately 240,000 customer accounts. This division is also responsible for responding to 24-hour, 7-day emergency on-call duty for dispatch, water, sewer, and meter services.
The distribution system contains approximately 3,800 miles of water distribution main line. The main lines range in size from 2” – 72”. The Distribution work group is responsible for the installation, repair and maintenance of these water mains and service lines. The work group is also responsible for the maintenance of approximately 41,000 valves and 44,000 fire hydrants.
The collections system contains approximately 3,050 miles of sewer main line, including force mains. The Collections work group is responsible for the installation, repair, and maintenance of all sewer mains, sewer manholes, and sewer valves, This work group also provides 24-hour response to sewer overflows and back-ups, tap/stub location and installation services, TV Inspections of newly developed projects and existing lines, force main repairs, and easement encroachment investigations. This work group also includes a team of employees that is responsible for the FOG (Fats, Oils, and Grease) elimination program. This program provides grease trap inspections, public education, and design plan reviews to help reduce the amounts of fats, oils, and grease introduced into the sanitary sewer system.
The Contracts and Support work group manages the contracts used for the identification and reduction of inflow and infiltration into the sanitary sewer system, sewer rehabilitation projects, and the collection of asset management information for the sewer system. This work group also oversees clearing efforts for the 900 miles of easements used to perform maintenance on utility assets located outside the right-of-way. This work group also includes a group of specialized employees who are responsible for the installation, maintenance and repair of water service lines and water meters. This maintains approximately 240,000 water meters in Gwinnett County, and oversees the monthly meter reading efforts. The Backflow Prevention work group monitors and assists customers with the installation, inspection, and reporting associated with backflow devices.
The Dispatch work group is responsible for all incoming calls related to water, sewer, and storm water emergencies. The Dispatch work group provides 24- hour, 7-day emergency phone call coverage for the Water Resources customers.
